Cross to the Stone Island in Mazatlan for 35 pesos
If you want to know the beaches of Stone Island (Isla de la Piedra) in Mazatlán, you don’t need to spend a lot, but we do ask you to take care of the beach. To cross at some of the piers it can cost you between 30 and 35 pesos for the round trip to the island (take care of your return ticket).
Sprig pier or Embarcadero de la Puntilla
On one side of where the ferries arrive and before entering the tip is one of the piers, it appears in google maps as CROM pier, this leaves you a few steps from the beach and a short walk from the beach of Cerro de the goats.
Pier Seafood Market or Embarcadero Mercado de mariscos
This entrance has a large sign that says “Embarcadero Isla de la Piedra” and it has parking and inside there is a fresh seafood market where local fishermen carry their product from very early on.
This pier offers its service very early since it is the one used by the residents of the stone island to cross to Mazatlán and to transport products between the island and Mazatlán.
Other ways to get to the island of stone
It is not news for people who have visited Mazatlan that there is a tour to the stone island that includes a walk through the bay, a dish, and an open bar, we recommend the tour to the island of Momentum leaves from the La puntilla Restaurant.
You can also drive to Stone Island, before arriving at the Mazatlán international airport there is a sign at the fork that takes you to the island so you can travel alone or as a family in the comfort of your car, it is a bit of away. It takes longer to arrive but if you like to drive it will not cause you any discomfort.
Magic Stone Island
Trip to Durango!
We were so excited to take a break from the steamy hot summer weather in Mazatlán. We broke out the jeans, jackets, and closed-toed shoes and headed to a small development in Durango called “Llano Grande”
The change in wardrobe was warranted because Durango is located 7927 feet above sea level and the temperatures are much cooler than what these two beach bums are used to. During our stay, the temperature ranged from a high of 16°C during the day to a low of 5°C at night.
Where Is It?
Llano Grande is a small town of approximately 1,938 people located in the Mexican state of Durango. Above the town in the mountains is a growing gated community that reminds me of what Sunriver, OR would have looked like in its beginning stages. They are building a community of privately owned cabins, with the main lodge, hiking trails, bike paths, zip lines, horses, etc.… They are still a few years out from being completely developed. This is where we stayed and rented a cabin for the weekend!
It’s amazing how you can go from Sea Level in Mazatlán to the Mountains of Durango in 2.5 hours driving. In just a short period of time, you are on the beach drinking a Margarita in hot weather to wearing long pants and jackets, smelling the pine trees, and breathing the fresh mountain air.
Although we LOVE the beach, we also enjoy the mountains. Lionne and I bought a piece of land in Llano Grande years ago. One of these days, we will build our own cabin, so whenever we want to take a break from the heat or if a hurricane is headed our way.
Traveling There:
Lionne and I absolutely love car rides, so when we heard that it would take 2.5 hours to drive there from Mazatlán, we were like WOW, What? This is fantastic!
We drove from Mazatlán to Llano Grande on the new Toll Road. The drive is absolutely spectacular. Take your time, get out to take lots of photos. It’s so scenic and beautiful. You go through 61 tunnels to be exact. At Km 164 you go over a small bridge and then at Km 158 you go over the largest suspension bridge in Latin America. Truly a sight to see.
There are three tolls on your way.
Toll 1 = $49 pesos
Toll 2 = $166 Pesos
Toll 3 = $315 Pesos
Our First Impressions
As we approached the small town of Llano Grande, you think to yourself…. Is this it? As you ride through town you follow the signs to Bosque’s de Llano Grande. These signs lead you up the mountains along a gravel road. It’s a good idea to travel with a 4-wheel drive.
We had a wonderful time visiting Parque Natural Mexiquillo for the day. For anyone who is not familiar with Parque Natural Mexiquillo, they are known for their waterfalls. From where we stayed Parque Natural Mexiquillo was approx. a 35 min drive towards Mazatlán. Once you enter the park, they charge $25 pesos per person to enter.
We decided to see the waterfalls and the park by ATVs. You can also walk or drive-in, but beware, the roads are very rough. The ATVs are set for 2 people to ride on them and cost us $1200 pesos per ATV for a 2 ½ hour tour. Highly, Highly Recommend, we had a blast.
We snapped a lot of pictures during our trip and we included some of our favorites
Recipe By: Joan Ellison
Salsa Verde from my Mexican granddaughter in law

1/2 white onion chopped.
1 jalapeño pepper finely chopped, seeds removed.

In a medium saucepan, add tomatillos, garlic, onion, and jalapeño, bring to boil, and then simmer for about 5-8 minutes. Thoroughly drain, set aside to cool.
Once cooled put in a food processor or blender, add salt, cilantro, and lime juice, blend on high for 2-3 minutes.Step 3
Transfer to sealed container and chill for About an hour. Makes 2 1/2 cups. Good in the fridge for one week.Used fit dip, enchiladas, etc. The absolute best I have had. Please try it you won’t be disappointed.
