Unlocking the Rich Tapestry of History: The Benefits of Working with INAH in Mazatlán’s Historical District

Mazatlán, nestled on the Pacific coast of Mexico, boasts not only sun-kissed beaches but also a hidden gem within its historical district. Collaborating with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Mazatlán’s historic quarters offers a myriad of benefits that go beyond the surface, delving into the rich tapestry of the city’s cultural heritage.

Kristen & I recently purchased a ruin in the heart of Mazatlan’s Historical District.  Our original thought was to tear it down & build apartments.  Our goal was to build something that could not only appreciate but also be able to be deeded to our children.  In Mexico, you can do this without tax consequence.

We were disappointed to find out that the home lies within the designated areas of the protected historical district of Mazatlan.

We were directed to our lawyers both here in Mazatlan & Mexico City.  Everyone said, this is your constitutional right & you should fight INAH!  Well, after about 6 months of study, denied permits & what was going to be a $500,000 Peso bill & as much time as 2 years, we decided to find an alternate route & one that was more in line with our original goal which was to build something of a finish more in line with the architecture of centuries past.

A good friend and professional collegue introduced us to a doctor of Anthropology & someone who works directly with INAH.  This decision has really uplifted us & opened us to what a partnership, rather than a fight can do for our project.

Here are a few should you decide to do something similar.

**Preserving Cultural Legacy:**
One of the primary advantages of working with INAH in Mazatlán is the opportunity to actively contribute to the preservation of the city’s cultural legacy. The historical district, with its colonial architecture and centuries-old structures, serves as a living testament to Mazatlán’s vibrant past. INAH plays a pivotal role in safeguarding these historical treasures, and by working in collaboration, individuals and organizations can actively participate in the preservation efforts.

**Research Opportunities:**
INAH provides a gateway to unparalleled research opportunities for historians, archaeologists, and cultural enthusiasts alike. Mazatlán’s historical district is a treasure trove of historical artifacts, each with a story to tell. Collaborating with INAH opens doors to conducting research that can unearth hidden narratives, shedding light on the evolution of Mazatlán over the centuries.

**Educational Initiatives:**
Working with INAH in Mazatlán’s historical district offers a unique platform to engage in educational initiatives. These initiatives can range from organizing guided tours for schools to hosting workshops that promote awareness and appreciation of the city’s cultural heritage. By actively participating in educational endeavors, collaborators contribute to the transmission of cultural knowledge to future generations.

**Community Involvement:**
INAH’s presence in Mazatlán fosters community involvement, creating a sense of pride and ownership among the local residents. Collaborative efforts with INAH can include community outreach programs, inviting locals to actively participate in the preservation and celebration of their heritage. This not only strengthens community bonds but also ensures that the historical district remains a living, breathing part of Mazatlán’s identity.

**Tourism Boost:**
A partnership with INAH in Mazatlán’s historical district can significantly contribute to boosting tourism. The well-preserved colonial architecture, coupled with informative exhibits and guided tours facilitated by INAH, becomes a magnet for cultural tourists. Increased tourism not only benefits local businesses but also raises awareness about the importance of preserving historical sites.

In conclusion, working with INAH in Mazatlán’s historical district is a multifaceted opportunity that extends far beyond the preservation of bricks and mortar. It is an invitation to become stewards of history, unlocking the city’s past for current and future generations. Through collaborative efforts, Mazatlán’s historical district can continue to thrive as a living testament to the cultural richness that defines this picturesque Mexican gem.

Creamy Chicken Enchiladas with sour cream are simple and tasty! With 10 minutes prep, these are a weeknight staple.

Enchiladas have become a monthly staple and whether you are making green, red, or casserole versions – you can never go wrong making these for Christmas dinner.

WHITE ENCHILADA SAUCE. This recipe is so creamy due to the sauce being made from a can of cream of chicken, sour cream and cream cheese.

Start by mixing together your sour cream, cream cheese, green chiles, and cream of chicken. Remove about 1/3 of the mixture (save it for topping), and add your shredded chicken to the remaining 2/3 of the sauce and stir.

PREP. Use cooking spray to coat a 9×13 baking dish, and spread a tiny bit of your mixture on the bottom.

ROLL. Create the enchiladas by putting a large spoonful, plus a generous amount of cheese inside each tortilla. Roll them up and place in the pan (you might have to place most horizontally and a few vertically to make them all fit). Also, place seam side down so that they don’t unroll at all.

BAKE. Once the pan is full, pour the 1/3 of mixture you saved over the top of the rolled enchiladas, sprinkle on some more shredded cheese, and bake at 350, covered with foil, for an hour. Remove the foil for the last 15 minutes of baking.

As always, recipes can be altered to your liking. Here are substitution ideas and tips for these creamy chicken enchiladas:

  • Use corn tortillas for this recipe, but we prefer flour tortillas for this version.
  • Use other cream of soups in this recipe if you don’t have cream of chicken.
  • Trade out sour cream for plain greek yogurt and you can definitely do the same in this recipe. Just switch out an equal amount of sour cream for the yogurt.
  • Try a different type of cheese like cheddar cheese, Monterey jack cheese, queso blanco, or a spicier pepper jack cheese are great options because these all melt easily and taste great in enchiladas.
